Users have access to a variety of information services according to the Libraries Administration policies and regulations.

  • Circulation

    All libraries materials may be checked out with the exception of reference materials, original dissertations and periodicals. The circulation policy below shows the loan period allowed for different categories of users:

  • Reserve Materials

    Items are reserved upon the professor's request or if the item is in demand. Items are to be used in the library only and could be photocopied.
     

  • Photocopying

    KUL provides photocopying services for both print and non-print materials to all library users. Priority is given to non-circulating items. Charges are 20 fils per page (Some libraries offer color photocopying. Charges are 150 fils per page per A4 and 200 fils per A3 size papers). Faculty members may photocopy up to 600 pages per academic year free of charge. Copyright law forbids the photocopying of an entire book or a periodical.

    Photocopy using chip or magnetic card is available to faculty members and graduate students in some libraries.
     

  • Instruction and Orientation

Instruction and Orientation services at KUL aim to familiarize the user with the library and to effectively use its resources, such as the printed and electronic catalog OPAC, reference books and electronic databases.

  • Reference

Information specialists are available at the reference desk to help users and answer their queries effectively and efficiently using the reference collections or electronic resources.

  • Online Searches

KUL provide faculty members with sophisticated online search facilities via a direct link with DIALOG in the U.S.A. where 800 electronic files could be searched in all branches of knowledge. This service provides bibliographic citation for journal articles, studies and books in addition to access to abstracts or full-text copies.

CDROM bibliographic databases at KUL provide the researcher with a vast amount of information in the form of bibliographic citations, abstracts or full text articles.

  • Internet

This service allows the user to gain access to a variety of electronic resources such as bibliographic databases, KUL's OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) and electronic journals.

  • Interlibrary Loan

Access to materials not available at KUL could be provided by interlibrary loan or document delivery through cooperation with local libraries, the libraries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), or the British Library Document Supply Center (BLDSC). Loaning charges are K.D.6.250 per book and K.D.3.500 per photocopied article. Kuwait University faculty members are entitled to 30 articles free of charge per year.

  • Current Awareness

This service aims to keep faculty members up to date with new library materials through the compilation of monthly and quarterly bibliographies of current books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials, in addition to distributing the tables of contents of various periodicals which may be of interest to faculty members.

  • Selective Dissemination of Information

The information specialists at KUL provide researchers with regular updates on the current developments in the literature of their fields after in-depth analysis of  their information needs.

  • Audio-visual and Photography

  1. Audio-visual services include the following:

  • Filming various academic, cultural and scientific activities at Kuwait University.

  • Installation and maintenance of audio-visual equipment in the classroom and lecture halls.

  • Providing the departments concerned with copies of video taped and recorded activities.
